USA: Pinsly Railroad Co has acquired Kankakee, Beaverville & Southern Railroad Co, taking its short line portfolio to 10 lines. KBSR was formed by Beaverville businessman Fey Orr in 1977 to operate a 40 km segment of former New York Central route between Sheldon and Kankakee, and in the 1980s and 1990s it acquired lines from various Class I railways to maintain services for agricultural customers in the region. Orr died in 1997, and his legacy was continued by family members Kevin and Vickie Stroo, and their sons Neil and Tyler. The company now operates a 260 km triangular network serving grain elevators and agri-chemical distributors in Illinois and Indiana, connecting with Class I railways CSX, CN, Norfolk Southen and Union Pacific, and with Genesee & Wyoming’s short line Toledo, Peoria & Western Railway. Traffic of 10 000 wagonloads a year, includes grain, agricultural chemicals, plastics and bird seed. Daily services are provided as required, and a fleet of KBSR covered hoppers is available to customers. ‘We look forward to working with Tyler and Neil to grow the business and continue supporting the multiple shippers across Illinois and Indiana’, said Pinsly CEO Ryan Ratledge. ‘Like many of the Pinsly railroads, KBSR is a high-value, owned asset with access to multiple Class I railroads and deep ties to the communities it serves.
