AZERBAIJAN: The Asian Development Bank is providing national railway ADY with a US$350m loan to support the conversion of the 192 km line from Bilajari in Baku to Yalama on the Russia border from 3 kV DC to 25 kV 50 Hz electrification and install modern signalling and telecoms. Aims include reducing energy consumption, CO2 emissions and maintenance costs, enabling faster and more efficient operation of the line as a key link in the Central Asia Regional Economic Co-operation network and boosting trade through Baku. A separate component of the loan package announced on October 6 is aimed at improving employment opportunities for women in technical, supervisory and management roles at ADY. ‘Modernising the railway infrastructure in Azerbaijan will help make the country’s rail transport network more competitive, energy-efficient, and environmentally sustainable’, said ADB country director for Azerbaijan Sunniya Durrani-Jamal. ‘The project will enable safer rail operations, reduce transportation costs and strengthen regional connectivity.’ ADB has previously supported ADY through its 2016 Sector Development Programme which financed the modernisation of a 166 km section of the Sumgayit – Yalama line, and has supported reform of corporate governance, financial management and operational efficiency.
